Frasier inspired music thoughts and LinkedIn observations. I bet Frasier would have had a field day on linkedin.

Whats New

I decided to listen to all of the unnamed musical snippets in my voice notes. In some I'm trying to remember if an idea was already a song. Others were bad, but maybe I'll like them someday.

There's an episode of Frasier where Martin is sad he hadn't finished writing a song to pitch to Frank Sinatra. Frasier and Niles help Martin finish the song over the course of some sitcom hijinks. When the song doesn't work out with Frank, Frasier gives the song to a choir[1] to sing (at a funeral, of course).[2] That stuck with me. It wasn't what Martin had hoped, but the song existed.

Anyway, a few my recordings surprised me and I thought "I did that?" I don't know what they'll be yet, but I'm figuring that out. Whatever the result, I'll have made something and that's nice.

On the other end of the spectrum, I recently wrote a few engagement-style posts on LinkedIn. I knew I was writing for their algorithm, but I wasn't expecting it to feel so… not me? I like what I wrote about, but after fitting it into the "hide your point after the 'read more…'" templates it just looked similar to everything else on LinkedIn. Also! A friend quickly (and rightfully) called out the em-dashes[3] and emoji, indicating they made my posts look like AI. It wasn't, but it looked like it was.

There's a some difference between those two topics of course, but I can't help but think about how creating for an algorithm impacts what we make. I dunno! Ask Frasier.

Notes

  1. I like the implication that Frasier arranges the song for a choir ↩︎
  2. Sorry if I spoiled that, the episode came out in 1995 you've had time! ↩︎
  3. AI will never take those away from me ↩︎
